Izmir, Turkey Reviews View Cheap Holidays To IzmirIzmir, Turkey Crazy About Izmir Rating: 9/10 Submitted by: Wilfred Date of travel: 02/01/2005
Izmir is the 3 biggest city in Turkey and is located on the shores of the Aegean Sea. We fell in love with Turkey and felt comfortable traveling throughout because we LOVED Izmir so much. We spent our first couple of days traveling to see the military sea ports and walking through the mountains. Breakfasts and lunches were on the waterfront promenade which had the cutest cafes. Although there was much history everywhere Izmir still kept up with the times with internet cafes, modern buildings and well constructed safe roads. I have been to my share of countries where you get tossed around on the bumpy bus rides and that was my fear for Turkey. Well completely the opposite.
My husband was honored to be in the place where the legendary home lived in 70BC. He is absolutely in love with the Odyssey and the Illiad so his heart jumped when we saw his home. One weekend I fell in love with the main bazaar located in the centre of the city. It was near the old Ottoman government mansion (which is my new home) and had so many foods and items to sell. We bought Turkish rugs and real bronze where. The locals use them to actually cook but we are going to but them on display at home.
Our trip was so busy that year because there was so much to do in Izmir. We enjoyed Kadifekale which is the ancient fortress that was built in view of the harbor and city in 4th century BC. Saat Kulesi (the clock tower) took up much room in our cameras. It was built in 1901 and is the symbol that you see in most Izmir postcards. We saw artifacts, traditional costumes and camel bridles at the Ethnography History museum and walked through the Ancient Ruins of The Agora. Since then we have been to 4 other countries on the coast. Thank you people of Izmir for making it unimaginably good.
