My husband and I have just come back from 8 days on Lago di Garda. We stayed for the most part in Desenzano del Garda which was far and away our favourite place on the Lake. The people are very friendly, it is extremely easy to get around, the weather was really beautiful. We are thinking of moving there next year and our trip confirmed it for us. We travelled by bus and ferry to Peschiera, Sirmione, Bardolino, Moniga, Padenghe and Manerba and thought they were very nice. Salo and Bardolino are particularly beautiful for a visit.
The food and wine are very, very good but like everywhere it is good to get off away from the most touristy parts and find better priced and better value food in other restaurants. This was less true in Desenzano where we didn't have a meal that wasn't particularly good. The wine from this region is excellent and we 'discovered' a local vino frizzante, really well priced - only 10 Euro and lovely. The best food we had in Desenzano was from Il Gatto Pardo, run by a Sicilian family, the flavours were amazing and the food was really fresh. It is found on the main road, opposite the Lake in Desenzanino. We stayed at the Villa Rosa, the staff speak very good English, the service was excellent and our room overlooked the lake. They also provided tea and coffee facilities in the room, which is always a touch that works for me. This was definitely one of the best holidays we have ever had - I would encourage anyone to visit. I visited lake Garda on my own & can say quite easily that this is one of the prettiest places I have ever seen, especially the Balcony of Thrills at Tremosine the view over the lake is second to none. Also the pretty harbour and village of Limone with its cobbled streets and picturesque buildings. I was a little bit intrepid at first as this was the first holiday I ever undertook alone, but no worries I found everything very relaxed and friendlyTorbole, Italian Lakes, Italy Rating: 5/10 Submitted by: Andy Date of travel: 05/05/2006
Torbole is a great base for a trip to the lakes. Lake Garda is spectacular and the local people are very friendly and welcoming. Stayed in Atlantic Club Hotel. Make sure you ask for a room with a view of the Lake. A hire car is useful in this area as public transport is limited. Riva del Garda, Italian Lakes, Italy Rating: 7/10 Submitted by: Stan Date of travel: 15/03/2007
Enjoyed a fantastic holiday to Riva Del Garda this year. Was nice to go earlier in the year before the summer rush as I could imagine that it would be much more crowded in the summer. Definitely hire a car or you run the risk of getting trapped in your hotel enjoying lazing around staring at the views when there is so much more to do!!Malcesine, Italian Lakes, Italy Rating: 10/10 Submitted by: kate Date of travel: 28/05/2006
I got married at the excelsior bay hotel in Malcesine and I couldn't have asked for a more perfect day. Everything was beautiful... as it was my wedding day I may be a bit biased but the other guests seemed to have a good time too! lol! The views of the lake are stunning and there's plenty to do other than get married!
Limone, Italian Lakes, Italy HOT HOT HOT Rating: 8/10 Submitted by: Daisy Date of travel: 30/08/2002
I've never been so hot in my life! If you are think of visiting Limone, Lake Garda in August then be prepared! I'm not complaining though! It was great! Sunshine everyday for two weeks. Fantastic water sports, sumptuous Italian food and wine and really friendly hotel staff. We stayed at Hotel Limone. THe hotel was ok. Nothing special but we didn't go to italy to eat and sleep in our hotel all day! gorgeous holiday destination i would love to go back to.Italian Lakes, Italy Rating: 8/10 Submitted by: Jeff Date of travel: 20/05/2007
Hired a car earlier this year and drove around the Italian Lakes with my wife and two young children. We had a fantastic time. The distances between the different lakes are not too long so the kids didn't get too bored. Hotels were great and rooms were shild friendly. no gaping balcony rails or sharp corners! The Sportsman Hotel in Garda was a favourite.
Water sports at the lakes are fantastic! and venice and verona are not far so you can always make a day trip. Food and wine in the region is fantastic and the theme parks were great for the kids.
Lake Garda, Italian Lakes, Italy Rating: 7/10 Submitted by: John Date of travel: 10/08/2006
I went with 30 of my teenage school kids to Lake Garda. This is definitely a great place for kids. Although next time I'm going to take my own!
The Gardaland theme park is fantastic. The vertical drop and the log flumes were a particular favourite. The water park was also great fun. Plenty of flumes to keep the kids and their young at heart teachers entertained! I didn't have any problems letting the kids enjoy the park in groups. They were completely safe the whole time.
Everyone like pasta and pizza so no problems with getting kids to eat everything. For the grown ups the locally produced Valpolicella wine is fantastic. The heat did get to some of them so pack the sun block and hats! And because this area is still very much Italian, we got plenty of opportunity to speak the language but if any of the kids got stuck, the locals were very friendly and easily switched to english. |
