We spent our honeymoon in a wonderful hotel near the little resort of Puerto de Mogan in the south west of Gran Canaria. This island is wonderful, with some beautiful little towns and villages to be found - don't be afraid to hire a car! We spent time in the mountains, as well as a day in the capital of Las Palmas, which had a brilliant indoor food market, and Christopher Columbus' house, which was open to the public, really interesting, beautiful, and best of all free! I would highly recommend the market in Puerto de Mogan on a Friday morning, as well as Maspalomas for the beautiful dunes and sandy beach, and Puerto Rico for the bars!San Agustin, Gran Canaria, Spain Rating: 10/10 Submitted by: Mandi Date of travel: 30/06/2007
I went to Gran Canaria with my parner and 2 friends in 2007, we had a fantastic time. The weather was brilliant, the people were helpful and friendly. On arrival we were upgraded for free to a large 2 bedroom villa with a terrace and a balcony overlooking the beach. The hotel was great, the food was really nice and there was lots of it. The beach was clean and not at all overcrowded. We are hoping to go back again towards te end of this year. Couldn't have wished for a better holiday.San Agustin, Gran Canaria, Spain San Agustin Gran Canaria Rating: 3/10 Submitted by: cindy Date of travel: 17/12/2007
Me and my partner went to Gran Canaria. The hotel we stayed in the beds were hard. My partner got a bad back from the beds we asked to see the dr it was his day off. The weather was quite warm since we went late in the year we could not swim in the pool as the water was below freezing point, its the first cold jacuzzi that i have ever been in. We went on safari it was part on land then on water the water part was cancelled as there was a storm at sea. The local people were nice and friendly and tried to help as much as possible except dont try to get a dr as it could be his day off there.Meloneras, Gran Canaria, Spain Excellent Holiday Choice! Rating: 8/10 Submitted by: Beth Date of travel: 11/07/2007
What a great holiday... Tones to see and plenty to do, the safari trip was a good day out, seeing all the animals close up was amazing, it was a fantastic experience. The hotel was very spacious, cosy and had that homely feeling to it. Hotel food was luscious, very tasty and cheap too. Drinks were a little more expensive, especially the cocktails. The hotel had some evening entertainment, but it was limited though. The mountain views from the beach were great, Meloneras is such a great resort, very peaceful and clean and the locals are very happy too. Gran Canaria, Spain Weather Was Awful! Rating: 6/10 Submitted by: Wesley Date of travel: 25/10/2006
Gran Canaria is a nice place but the weather wasn't as warm as expected, I know it was late in the year but I hoped for a hot holiday and not a wet holiday. A couple of the days were nice but the rest were miserable. Shame really as the resort was very nice and lively. There wasn’t much going on either, properly as it was near the end of the season. It’s a great place though considering.Bahia Feliz, Gran Canaria, Spain Rating: 8/10 Submitted by: Malissa Date of travel: 13/06/2007
Bahia Feliz is a cheerful resort with friendly people everywhere. One of the favourite parts of the holiday was the Jeep Safari trip into Gran Canaria, we explored the rocky, arid terrain of the south, or the more lush, fertile north. The whole resort is shaded with palm trees and there is water fountains on the streets, get ready for a soaking! The food is very tasty and very cheap too, and the beer is nice a cool, just how it should be. It was very easy to relax here; it was very homely and welcoming. The sand dunes are a perfect place to relax as well with the sea breeze keeping you cool. I love Bahia Feliz.Bahia Feliz, Gran Canaria, Spain Rating: 6/10 Submitted by: Stacey Date of travel: 16/08/2006
Bahia Feliz is fairly quiet but has amazing views. Using local transport such as buses is conveniant and quick to get to nearby resorts such as playa de ingles. The bus journey to porta reco takes a little while from Bahia feliz but is worth the journey as there are a lot of shops there, a lovely beach and a few english pubs.
The only down side to Bahia Feliz is the volcanic sand on the beaches (it is a dark grey colour) Apart from that my whole family had a very relaxing holiday.Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria, Spain Puerto Rico Fun Rating: 9/10 Submitted by: Jackson Date of travel: 12/12/2005
Our apartments were at top of a hill in sight of everything. It was nice to be able to look out of your room window or the windows in the lobby and see all of the nature and places to go. The water park is worlds of fun. It is only 10 minutes by walking and well worth the walk. The beach is 10 minutes farther than that but when walking with others it did not feel that far at all. The food was great but we lost a lot of weight by walking up to the apartments and to the other destinations. Taxis and buses are good prices but we much rather walked because it was nice to look around. Our nights were packed full of excitement and dancing. Many of the bars served one Euro drinks every night and burgers and chips for less than 4 Euro. At each bar there was some entertaining thing to do like a karaoke contest, dancing celebration, or all you can eat wings for a low price.
When we wanted to go American we ate at Mc Donald’s and conversed with our fellow tourists. For the rest of the time we remained Spaniard tourists shopping on the strip, practicing the language and spending time relaxing by the bay.
Gran Canaria - Other, Gran Canaria, Spain Great Holiday! Rating: 8/10 Submitted by: Roxanne Date of travel: 23/09/2007
I come to Gran Canaria every year and it never changes, in a good way that is of course. But the hotel we stayed in this year was amazing, the pool was on the roof and the view was absolutely wonderful. You could see for miles and the beach looked beautiful. There was a selection of fresh fruit and bottles of chilled water to help yourself to which was a good gesture. There was also a gym, sauna, steam room, cocktail bar, restaurant plus many other great facilities included. Through out the day there was a wide selection of activities going on so that kept you busy until the evening. One of my favorite bars was the Bachira which had live music and pole dancers, and there was a club called Heaven, that brought back some memories of when I was in my twenties. It’s a lively and fun resort, can be noisy at times but that’s expected where ever you go. Never short of anything going on, that’s why I always go back every year as you know what you’re going to get for your money’s worth. It’s my favorite place.Playa Del Ingles, Gran Canaria, Spain Fabulous! Rating: 8/10 Submitted by: Jim Date of travel: 17/03/2007

Sonnenland, Gran Canaria, Spain A Residents Town Rating: 9/10 Submitted by: Dawn Date of travel: 18/09/2006
My model shoot took place in Sonnenland de Gran Canaria. The back drop was perfect for our perfume ad so we spent 2 days shooting the photos at the site. I was due for a holiday so my boyfriend flew up after the hold and we stayed there for a week. We were told by the Spaniards that the town used to be centered about tourists but recently has transformed into town of residents who work in the surrounding Playa del Ingles and Puerto Rico resorts. I preferred the non-tourist feel. Everything was more smartly priced and the residents spoke about life now and back then and what they hoped for the future. The people were real. They did not have to put on the fake smile and false pleasing conversations to appease tourist. They also gave us the inside scoop of what annoys them most about travelers. My initial impressions of Sonnenland were influenced but the amount of hotels. The locals told me that this place has more hotels per square mile than anywhere else on the island and that is what I thought it would be. I was wrong and glad about the.
I enjoyed speaking with the residents and the vast mix of people who visited and who lived there. They were really laid back like us. The city center thrived but because locals lived there, it was more fun and cheap. Running through the sand dunes was silly fun and we were frequent visitors at the shops, restaurants, and bars.
Playa Taurito, Gran Canaria, Spain No Partiers Perfect for Us Rating: 9/10 Submitted by: Agatha Date of travel: 10/04/2007
Everything was fabulous about our holiday. We had exceptional staff, service, and food at the resort. There we many day activities so we never tired of one thing. We paid a little more and got into the lido area. Lovely place with places that you can sub-bathe without getting sand between the toes, gigantic pool, and an island with bars and bridges. The beach of Playa Taurito had natural BLACK sand which was hard to believe even when touching it. And no crazy nights with crazy teenagers running rampant. Nights were quiet filled with caf's not dance clubs so coffee and tea. Even a walk over to Puerto Mogan kept you in the relax night air. We went to dine and drink and for a change of scene. I shopped until I dropped at Playa del Ingles. It had more people than Taurito but a greater assortment of shopping complexes. Many of the people who I traveled with did not fancy walking. We took the bus for main transportation which proved cheap and easy on the bodies. Even taxis did not go over ?4 a piece once we shared the fair. In the park we had room to speed walk and eat lunches. What a tranquil break on the side of a valley. Playa De Amadores, Gran Canaria, Spain It was Nice Rating: 7/10 Submitted by: Ofel Date of travel: 20/06/2005
Two years ago we went to holiday in Playa Amadores. We usually go to Puerto Rico but we wanted to try something a bit different this time. We were very happy that Playa Amadores was quite different than Puerto Rico. I still have to admit that I prefer Puerto Rico but our time at the Playa was quite good. The beach is in the shape of a horse shoe so you can look on to the other side. It was great for the children because they had more freedom on account that it was not crowded, clean and sheltered. The restaurants were certainly cheaper than the bigger Puerto Rico and the food was top quality. My wife and I went diving to explore the underwater ship wrecks while the children snorkeled on top with their cousins.Playa Del Cura, Gran Canaria, Spain Their Little Hideaway Rating: 8/10 Submitted by: Maya Date of travel: 05/12/2006
Playa Del Cura is a small resort on the south west coast of Gran Canaria. It is built on cliffs that overlook the coast made so that it is low-key. My uncle and aunt call it their little hideaway spot because it is peaceful and not a usual site for tourists. When they want to get out and around they take cheap taxis for Puerto Rico but 95% of their trips are spent in the resort. My uncle and aunt have been back to that resort 4 times. They say that each time it gets better because the people know them by name. This last time they told me that they walked along the rocky coastline and looked over the small valley. They spent a little more time in town than usual because they finally decided to eat at Bistro 22. The other 3 holidays to Playa Del Cura they avoided it because it was known as the most popular at the resort and they like going against the grain. But when they tried it, they did not want to leave. The food was excellent and cooked to perfection. My uncle said that they cook the shrimp just long enough and add special spices to the fish.
I get little gifts of food sent in packages. My relatives buy food from the Spar market and send it home to us. We never get pastries though, despite the fact that my aunt raves about the bakery. They take love in the fact that the beaches are more rocky than sandy. It is easier to walk and run on and more excuse to lounge on beach chairs. Their first trip there they took the Island Tour to make sure that they loved the entire island before they made it their hideaway. It took them all day and the coach ride was bumpy but they keep returning.
Playa Del Ingles, Gran Canaria, Spain LOVED IT 100% Rating: 10/10 Submitted by: Brittney Date of travel: 07/03/2007
Rumor had it that if we wanted an incredible spring break experience that we should choose Playa Del Ingles. We did and spring break had never been better. Playa Del Ingles is the second biggest resort in all of Europe. The beach was big and even though there were a lot of people you still had room to have races, play tug of war, volleyball and soccer.
When we got there, there was so much that we could do that we got overwhelmed. We actually had to sit down everybody in one room and plan what all 14 of us were going to so while there. Most day times were our lazy times. Chilling at the beach or playing in the pool. Girls got massages and nails done and boys pretended they were something special to the other girls.
Other days we went into town (the buses are really easy to figure out) so that we could get all aspects of the holiday. We went to the souvenir shops, played bingo, the supermarket, and to bars. Anexo II to the north was a town on the beach still and was the only real place that we say people water skiing and on boards. The beach at the resort had too many people to do that kind of thing.
At night our holiday heat up. We ate cheap for breakfast and lunch so that we could go all out for dinner. The restaurants in the towns had THE food to die for and were not as crowded as the ones in the resort. After eating we went to a nice mix of clubs and bars and danced at both. One night at a bar, my friend started to dance, made all of us dance and people that we did not know started dancing with us too. That night we met people from Spain and Scandinavia.
San Agustin, Gran Canaria, Spain Our Honeymoon Rating: 6/10 Submitted by: Carlos Date of travel: 31/05/2005
My wife and I went on holiday to San Agustin for our honeymoon. The island is lovely for our money's worth but we did not tell too many great stories when we returned. The food was new and tasty and they served big portions. The pools good size and I enjoyed them much more over the beach. The beach was nothing that the pictures showed on the catalogues. Over crowded with children running wild and bothering others frequently and rubbish everywhere. Our complaints fell on deaf ears because nothing was done. The employees at the hotel and bars did everything that that we asked but slowly with negative attitudes. When our Air Condition unit malfunctioned it took them 2 ? days to come take a look at it. The saving grace of the trip was our location was in town. Local merchants assembled items that you could not find elsewhere. Moderately priced items and gifts for our families. We took day tours around the island and on the water. The town's people were nice which went well with the traditional set up and character of the surroundings. All in all we had a good time on the island but were not too keen on returning to the hotel everyday. Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria, Spain The Audacity Rating: 4/10 Submitted by: Samantha Date of travel: 27/10/2006
Last year we had a two week stay at the Gloria Palace Amadores. The hotel is beautiful in an astounding location on the cliffs in Puerto Rico. Wow, when we first saw the hotel we were in love. Fantastic room sizes, clean fresh environment, and extremely large all the way around. We had visions of watching the sun rise and sun set and eating breakfast and dinner respectively. Our resort fantasy was brought down to planet earth when the greeting staff member opened her mouth: ?Can I help you or would like to spend the greater part of your day standing there and looking around?? Hmmmm a little taken aback, we thought nothing of it and continued to check in. We went to the beach to relax and take in the sun which was amazing. The water was perfect with a backdrop of rocks, umbrellas and sand that were the perfect compliment.
Pushing rude comments out of mind and feeling good again about holiday we went to the hotel restaurant. Utter disaster. My brother and I waited 17 minutes (I timed it) before waiter took the order for our drinks. That was ridiculous. You would think that after a show like that they would offer complimentary drinks but instead it took them 8 minutes to get our drinks to us. Appalled by the time and not willing to wait 2 hours to be served dinner we asked for the check so that we could leave. If Jared would not have walked up to the waiter, our 5 minutes that we waited for the check would have turned into more. Just not believing the audacity we complained to the manager. He did NOT apologize but kept saying in an annoyed voice ?It will be taken care of.?
We experienced rude and sloppy service for our week there. If it were not for being on the island and doing all the outside things the trip would be ruined. We thought the attitude was an island thing but no. The people at the bars and outside waiters were quite kind. Other guests of the hotel that we spoke to felt the same way. The service was terrible and the management did nothing but make empty promises that ?It will be taken care of.?
Meloneras, Gran Canaria, Spain Really Reallly ReallyGood Food Rating: 7/10 Submitted by: Sofia Date of travel: 03/01/2007
My sister went to Meloneras and she said that she was never in need of something to do. She took a Jeep safari to see the animals. In the safari she saw green valleys and volcanically formed mountains. She hired a trainer to teach her how to play golf. Monica told me that the golf course was grand and that she looked and listened to the sounds of the sea. She became really good for a beginner and my husband was on hot coals in their match. Windsurfing was not her forte but she said that she would do it again in a heart beat. Now my sister and her friends are party animals who are picky about their activity venue. To see that they were satisfied by the club scene in Las Palmas says a lot about the quality of the establishments. Monica could not keep quiet about the food and how the food was good and you cannot find better food anywhere. She is going to cook the food for me, and take me there to try the food. When it reaches my time of holiday I will go for the sun, safari and yes Monica, THE FOOD.Maspalomas, Gran Canaria, Spain Sweet Maspalomas Rating: 8/10 Submitted by: Ashanti Date of travel: 18/01/2006
We rode camels on our trip to Maspalomas. We rode them right across the sand dunes in the desert. They were so tall and soft and their humps were firm. For our time we relaxed and took life easy. Jerry and Sam spent their time in the bars, I played golf. The most adventurous task that required energy was the Holidayworld amusement park but it was the good kind of energy where everyone came out wet. Holidayworld is a water park set in the Wild Wild West theme. We had our pick of cool restaurants. The beach was big, and we stared at the sand dunes that held protected wildlife. The dunes were massive extending down for meters. Everywhere always clean tranquil. I liked the food as did the wild rabbits that would come around and beg.Bahia Feliz, Gran Canaria, Spain Special Times Rating: 7/10 Submitted by: April Date of travel: 21/09/2005
The resort of Bahia Feliz made our holiday special. It is charming because it is a representation of the Gran Canaria of the past while still offering all of the comforts of modern day. Our tour guide told us that the name translates to ?happy bay,? quite an accurate description. The resort was the host of dining in the shade of palm trees at bars and restaurants, and lounging around on the beach being lazy and taking pleasure in the breeze. My daughters learned how to wind-surf from the wind-surfing lessons that were held on the beach. We signed up right there and they were out on the water within minutes. We briefly went to check out Europe's biggest resort, Playa del Ingles. It was marvelous and we understood why it was so popular but it was pleasant to return back to our quiet spot. Bahia Feliz's flowers are beautiful and their scent floats in the air. Our family danced together to live music play by ordinary people in the warm soothing evening air.Gran Canaria, Spain Carnaval Fiesta Rating: 9/10 Submitted by: Tania Date of travel: 08/02/2007
Can I just say that Gran Canaria made a fantastic holiday! This island is so small that you can drive around it entirely in one day but the people have packed so much in it that there is something to do every second. The people are mega friendly and take pride in what they do. It all was top notch from the food, hotels, beaches, bars, and caf's. The people really look after and care for their island. And you KNOW I went out in the water and even entered the Jet Ski competition. I lost but it was so nice for the island girls to give me a hug and tell me how the men cheated (they really didn't it was just nice to say). I intentionally went in time for the carnival. Tickets were a little more expensive because of that but the extra money was worth it. The costumes were gorgeous and I brought replicas home for me. Men standing on stilts, feathered crowns 50 meters high and the best music under the sun. At the carnival I got so see the Festival of Ballet with performers from the U.K., U.K., France, Africa, and Holland. I was an audience member of the Spanish Light Opera, my favorite ever. My villa was small, cute, comfortable, and at times I wanted to stay sleeping in the comfortable bed.Gran Canaria - Other, Gran Canaria, Spain Rating: 7/10 Submitted by: Adam Date of travel: 25/04/2001
Gran Canaria is a nice place with planty scenery and activities. The hotel was not to bad and the pool area was big so that was cool. The beach was sandy, with a nice breeze from the shore and great things to do. I went on a boat trip around the island and enjoyed a day in Tenerife. The night life was good, you had a choice of bars, clubs, restaurants etc and great entertainment. I would go back to Gran Canaria and I do also recommend it as well. |
