Returned from The Ocean Bay hotel Cape Point on the 18/02/2008 this was our best holiday ever. We loved the Gambian people even though they are so poor they all manage a great big smile which puts you to shame considering the little things we moan about. We mixed with the people and was invited back to one of the staffs compound, he was so proud of his little place which was only a tin shack but he made us a cup of tea and we felt really welcome. My husband came home with hardly any clothes and shoes he shared them out between the locals they where thrilled to bits. We visited a local school that purely relied on donations to keep it going. tears welled up in our eyes when we met the children they were holing their hands out to us and managed to sing a song to us in English it was fantastic I felt so humbled. I took pencils, chalk and excercise books but next year I shall take more. We met a lovely bell boy named Ebrima he was the nicest person you would ever wish to meet and whenever we went into reception he would come and have a natter with us, he asked us to meet him and his wife and three children that was brilliant he was so proud of his lovely family and we spent a lovely hour chatting and laughing with them, The hotel was spotlessly clean, my only moan was about the lack of tea/coffee making facilities you know what us Brits are like, also the bathroom could do with refurbishing, but I do believe that is on the agenda. My husband and I are talking about going back next year if we can afford it, lets hope we can.Gambia Going downhill fast.......... Rating: 5/10 Submitted by: Pat Date of travel: 01/11/2007
I've visited The Gambia many times - usually staying in a local compound and I think its a shame that Kololi is becoming such a seedy place - I was appauled to find a funfair last time I visited. Would prefer to stay in Bakau or further south such as Kartong or Sanyang.Gambia beautyful people Rating: 10/10 Submitted by: davis Date of travel: 25/10/2007

I went to Gambia by myself. It was the perfect place to just chill out and relax and get away from work, family, children... everything! I stayed in Senegambia at Kololi Beach Hotel. Stunning resort with beautiful villas. Unfortunately the beach was swarmed with jelly fish so no body boarding on the rolling Atlantic for me!
I didn't stray far from the hotel. I was only there a week and just wanted to drink and have fun without having to get up to make breakfast for everyone and go to work the next day! As a woman on my own I was glad to have made friends with some people at the hotel and go out with them to bars as there were a lot of seedy guys hanging around. But they were harmless really!
And in Gambia you are guaranteed sunshine pretty much anytime of the year. Even in the rainy season it'll rain in the morning and be hot all afternoon! Definitely worth a visit again.... Might let the kids come next time! |
