Book your last minute deals with Virgin Holidays">Virgin Holidays for a break in Las Vegas this spring, as the city gears up for the World Series of Poker.

It is that time of year again. The time of year that sees media scrums build up along the Las Vegas strip as men and women look to win their fortune in arguably the biggest poker tournament in the world: the World Series of Poker.

Taking place from May 30th onwards, the World Series of Poker began in 1970 with fewer than 50 poker tables in Las Vegas.

Guaranteed to have contestants and those simply watching the show sweatnig with anticipation in their seats, this event is growing at a massive pace each year.

The contest that decided poker's first world champion was held inside an alcove the size of an ordinary hotel room with thirty gamblers seated around a few poker tables.

Now, the World Series of Poker sees thousands of players flood into Las Vegas annually and in 2007, the World Series of Poker was split into of 55 tournaments, all of which offered gold bracelets to the winners.

More than $100 million (£50 million) in prize money is available to winners, surpassing payouts for events such as Wimbledon and The Masters.
